About Leesburg Electric
The City of Leesburg Electric Utility was established in 1926 and serves approximately 16,300
residential customers and 3,200 commercial customers. The Electric department has 236.6 total
miles of Overhead Primary Lines, 130.26 total miles of Underground Primary Lines, and 6540
Transformers. The system includes five sub-stations and distribution facilities which cover a
total area of fifty square miles. The City of Leesburg purchases power through the Florida
Municipal Power Agency.
The City operates no generation facilities, but owns an undivided 0.8244% interest in and
generation entitlement share of Crystal River Number 3, a nuclear steam electric generating
unit. Progress Energy owns 90% of the unit and is responsible for the operation of the plant.
