Wastewater Treatment
The City of Leesburg Wastewater System was established in 1920 and serves approximately 37,300 residential customers and 2,000 commercial customers in Leesburg and the surrounding area. The wastewater system consists of 100 pumping and lift stations and 173 miles of sanitary sewer lines.
The City has an operating permit from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to operate two wastewater treatment plants. The system is in compliance with all state and federal regulations. The City treats its effluent to an advanced secondary standard utilizing it for irrigation of 675 acres of hay fields owned by the City.
Wastewater reuse is a commodity that is important for certain industries that require high volumes of water at reasonable rates. Reuse water also reduces the amount of water drawn from the aquifer. The wastewater department is in the process of constructing a water reuse facility in order to provide this service.
