The police dog, often referred to as a "K-9" in

 some areas, is a dog that is trained specifically to assist policeand other law enforcement personnel in their work. The most commonly used breeds are the German shepherd and Labrador retriever. Their value has been recognized by all to such an extent that there are thousands utilized in various police agencies in the United States.


The Leesburg Police Department Canine Unit consists of four full-service K-9 teams. Each team is comprised of a full service German shepherd dog and a handler. All dogs are trained in narcotic detection, tracking, and evidence recovery.
