Law Enforcement Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed the eighth grade and are 14 years of age, or are 15 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday.

Law Enforcement Explorer posts help youth to gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of law enforcement, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth. More information about law enforcement exploring is available by visiting the Learning for Life website External Link.

The Leesburg Police Explorer Post 1096 is open to all Leesburg area youth who are at least 14 years of age and have completed the 8th grade but who are not yet 21 years of age. Applicants must possess good moral character and have no criminal record. Each applicant must agree to a thorough background check to determine their eligibility for the program. Applicants must further agree to abide by the bylaws of the post and all department policies of the Leesburg Police Department. The post does have a limit of 20 members, but we do maintain a waiting list for those who are interested.

Law Enforcement Explorers participate in regularly scheduled meetings and various special events and activities. Law enforcement exploring activities include:

  • Classroom instruction of basic law enforcement activities
  • Hands-on training in firearms and defensive tactics
  • Police ride-alongs
  • Assisting with some law enforcement activities such as directing traffic or non-violent crowd control

Leesburg Police Explorers work very close with officers and the community help the department accomplish our mission statement, "Dedicated to Enhancing the Quality of Life Within Our Community".
