The purpose of the class is to perform technical work in the examination of plans, blueprints, and specifications pertaining to the construction of industrial, commercial, and residential projects to ensure compliance with all applicable building/construction codes and ordinances. The class is responsible for examining plans, assisting Building Inspectors, enforcing codes, and reporting.
 
Plans Examiner I - $23.18 - $35.04 per hour
Requires a high school diploma or GED and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in engineering, construction, or a closely related field.   Requires minimum 5 years of construction, engineering, drafting, or trade related experience or formal education in the construction/engineering field or a combination of these to meet eligibility requirements for licensure.
Requires 1 -3 Florida licenses listed in Florida Statue 468 for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical or one and two family dwelling (Note: one and two family dwelling license will count as 2 licenses).  A Fire Inspector certification may count as an additional license.  Requires a valid State of Florida Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
 
Plans Examiner II – $24.09 – $36.43 per hour
Requires a high school diploma or GED and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in engineering, construction, or a closely related field.   Requires minimum 10 years of construction, engineering, drafting, or trade related experience or formal education in the construction/engineering field or a combination of these to meet eligibility requirements for licensure.
Requires 4 to 6 Florida licenses listed in Florida Statue 468 for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical or one and two family dwelling (Note: one and two family dwelling license will count as 2 licenses).  A Fire Inspector certification may count as an additional license.  Considerable knowledge of State and local codes and laws for commercial, industrial and residential building construction. Prior Building Department plan review/inspection experience is a plus. Knowledge of appropriate codes and ability to interpret the codes.  Ability to read and interpret complex building/construction plans, diagrams, blueprints, and specifications.  Ability to travel within the assigned area will be required for inspections and/or managing assigned projects.  Working knowledge of inspection methods and procedures. Working knowledge of office & tablet computer software - Microsoft Office®™© applications (i.e.: Microsoft Word®™©, Microsoft Excel®™©, etc.), Outlook, and Permitting/Plan Review/Inspection software.  Requires a valid State of Florida Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
