The purpose of the class is to review construction plans for compliance with building codes.  The class is responsible for examining plans, inspections, providing revision recommendations, supervision of Building Inspectors and plans examiner, enforcing codes, and reporting.  The class works within broad policy and organizational guidelines; independently plans and implements projects; reports progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings.  This position involves electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural inspections and general enforcement of the building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural codes. Evaluations of Building Inspectors and Plans Examiner.  Requires a high school diploma or General Education Diploma(GED) and formal training, special courses, or self-education equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in engineering, construction, or a closely related field.  Requires ten years of experience in a construction related field. Knowledge of appropriate codes and ability to interpret the codes.  Knowledge of inspection methods.  Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications. Requires a valid State of Florida driver license and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment. Special Certifications and Licenses refer to state, federal, or professional certifications or licenses required entering or maintaining the job.
The following Licenses are required:
  • State of Florida Plans Examiner licenses which includes at least one of the  following:
    • Commercial Building Plans Examiner
    • Commercial Electrical Plans Examiner
    • Commercial Mechanical Plans Examiner
    • Commercial Plumbing Plans Examiner
    • State of Florida Inspector licenses which includes at least one of the following:
      • 1 & 2 Family
      • Commercial Building
      • Plumbing
      • Mechanical
      • Electrical
      • NFPA Fire Safety Inpsector
Must demonstrate qualifications per FS 468 to obtain Building Official License within one (1) year of employment.
