The purpose of the class is to perform responsible work in the collection of solid waste.  The class works under general supervision, performs routine tasks, semi-skilled and/or skilled tasks in the operation of front-loaders, roll-offs, side-loaders, rear-loaders, or similar equipment, and performs heavy manual labor for collecting, transporting, and disposing of solid waste materials from residential and commercial sources. Manual work and heavy lifting is also performed.  The class works within a general outline of work to be performed, develops work methods.  Employees in this class are responsible for the safe, economic, and efficient operation of light to moderately heavy refuse equipment.  Employees must also adhere to all traffic laws, applicable Federal and State health and safety rules. Requires a High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED). Requires 2 - 4 years of experience in operation of  various solid waste equipment such as a Roll-off Truck, Recycle truck, Grapple truck, Container truck and side loader for residential / commercial division, roll off and compactor container truck, front loader and dumpster delivery truck.  Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the operation of the vehicle(s). Requires knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules for operating a class B commercial vehicle; including experience reading and understanding route maps and street signs. Must be able to multi-task while still able to maintain efficiency and quality work. This position requires employees to reside within a 20-mile radius of the intersection of Main Street and 14th Street in Leesburg due to on call rotation requirement.  Weekend, holiday and afterhours work may be required, as well as after-hours response and emergencies. Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures but solves frequent problems. Ability to use simple mathematical formulas; add and subtract; multiply and divide; determine percentages; and determine or interpret time and weight. Ability to apply basic computer skills. Performs manual tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgment with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results. Requires a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License with a Class B and airbrake endorsement and satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
