What is a book club kit?
The Leesburg Public Library purchases a set of books for titles selected by the library’s hosted book clubs to read. After the library’s hosted groups discuss the title, the 12 copies of the book are housed as a “kit”. Book club kits are then available to loan to local book clubs in the community and other Lake County Library System reading groups. A group reserves and then uses the kit for their meeting.
A book club kit contains a set of 12 copies (often 10 regular print editions and 2 large print editions) of the same title and a discussion packet. The discussion packet contains an author profile, book reviews, supplemental materials (interviews, maps, photographs, etc. provided by the author) and suggested discussion questions. The kit comes in a tote bag to help the club coordinator transport the kit to and from the library.
When finished with the kit, all books and any unused materials from the discussion packet are to be returned to any Lake County library, which will transfer it back to the Leesburg Public Library. How long can a book club kit / book be checked out?
30 days, with no renewals
Who is allowed to checkout a book from a club kit?
The club coordinator (or a representative) and the members of the local club may check out the reserved book from the library during their reservation period.
Only a member of the reserving group may check out a copy of the reserved book club kit.
If your book club wishes to place a reservation for a specific title for the group’s use, ask your club’s coordinator to contact the Adult Services department of the Leesburg Public Library. Please call (352) 728-9790, menu option 3, or email the librarian
Where and how does a book club member retrieve a reserved book?
When the local club coordinator reserves a kit, the group chooses a library pickup location, and determines whether individual members will each pick up a copy or if one member will check out all copies.
If picking up at the Leesburg Public Library, come to the Reference Desk on the second floor. Request the title “reserved for (name of) book club.”
If picking up at another library in Lake County, go to that library and request the title “reserved for (name of) book club” at the Circulation Desk. The book or kit will be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Can I renew a book club book?
No. Book club books and kits are not renewable. The local group only has the kit for a set amount of time. The reservation process and the specific loan period allow other clubs in Lake County to schedule the kit during their reading seasons.
Can I place a single book club book on hold or an entire kit?
No. A reader cannot place a hold on asingle copy of a title from a book club kit via the online catalog. A local book club cannot place an entire kit’s titles on hold via the online catalog.
If your local book club wishes to reserve a specific title for the group’s use, ask your club coordinator to contact the Adult Services department of the Leesburg Public Library. Please call (352) 728-9790, menu option 3, or email the librarianWhere can I return the book club book once I am done?
When you are finished with the book, return it to any Lake County library. The staff will transfer the book back to the Leesburg Public Library via courier.
When an entire book club kit (all 12 titles, the discussion packet, and its tote bag) is finished, return the kit to any Lake County library. The staff will transfer the kit back to the Leesburg Public Library via courier. How can I request a book club kit?
The local book club’s coordinator can review the list of book club kits available on this site (see section 14).
To request a specific title, click on the action button located beneath each title and book description. An email panel will appear and be addressed to the Librarian. Supply the following pieces of information in the message area of the email:
- The title of the selected book
- The book club’s name
- A contact person for the club with their telephone number and email address
- The date of your meeting and what date you want to receive the book for distribution to your members. Provide at least one alternate meeting date, in case the title you are requesting is unavailable that month.
- The name of the library where you would pick up the kit
How can I update the contact person for my book club?
Email the local book club coordinator’s name and contact information to Adult Services at the Leesburg Public Library using email the librarian. We will update our internal records to reflect this new contact person for your group.
Can a book club kit be reserved several months in advance?
Yes. We encourage your group to requests kits ahead of time, as there are several other book clubs reserving kits.
How are the titles selected for the kits?
The book selections are made by the Leesburg Public Library’s hosted clubs, the Leesburg Library Literary Guild (LLLG) and Readers’ Circle, with input from the Adult Services librarians.
How often is the list of available kits updated?
The list is updated twice a year with the new titles.
Where can I locate information on books and authors?
All of the club kits come with a discussion packet. The discussion packet contains an author profile, book reviews, supplemental materials (interviews, maps, photographs, etc. provided by the author) and suggested discussion questions.
If a club wants to use a title that is not available as a club kit, information concerning the book and its author(s) may be gathered from multiple internet sources:
