Upper levels of the city parking garage at Main and Palmetto streets next to the Leesburg Public Library are open to the public again following two days of minor repairs.
Parts of the large, 10-year-old structure were closed to vehicle traffic in April as a safety precaution. City officials had spotted missing metal support connectors – most only a few inches wide - and broken concrete segments.
Leesburg hired engineering consultants to look at the structure and to find out the cause of the damage. Assessments determined that the broken connectors required repairs although they did not indicate significant structural problems.
Crews spent one day last week replacing several metal connectors. Metal plates and concrete patches were added two days later. The city will continue to monitor the garage for future changes.
“It is great to see the parking garage open again,” said Leesburg Mayor John Christian. “It was closed for safety concerns, but now it is ready for Leesburg’s big Fourth of July celebration.”
The huge 4th of July event - the most spectacular in Lake County – is co-sponsored by the Phillips Automotive Group, the Leesburg Partnership and the City of Leesburg. Activities will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at beautiful Venetian Gardens, 201 E. Dixie Ave. on the north shore of Lake Harris.
A special fireworks display choreographed to music by the famous Zambelli Fireworks Co. will begin at 9:15 p.m. Viewing areas are available all around the park including a section for blankets and chairs at Ski Beach and a boat tailgate on the east side of Venetian Cove.
The Leesburg Lightning – two time champions of the Florida Collegiate Summer League – will challenge the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs starting at 6 p.m. at Pat Thomas Stadium, which also provides ideal seating to watch the fireworks. Country music performer Ronny McKinley also takes the stage at Venetian Gardens at 6 p.m.
Phillips Automotive Group will present a free kid zone with inflated jump houses, games, entertainers and snacks while supplies last. Food vendors will serve up hamburgers, hot dogs and more. Cool off at the Venetian Gardens pool for free swimming from 1 to 7 p.m.
Parking is available around Venetian Gardens. Drivers are strongly encouraged to use convenient areas north of Dixie Avenue and throughout downtown Leesburg including the parking garage at Main at Palmetto.
