Leesburg Brings the World to Lakefront TV for Business Web Streaming

Mike Holt is no stranger to technology.

He periodically rents the video production studio at Lakefront TV to create instructional DVDs for his Leesburg-based electrical training business. It’s a far stretch from the clunky old audio-cassette tapes he recorded for customers 27 years ago.

This past weekend, however, Holt looked to Lakefront TV to try something new – three days of training sessions broadcast live via the Internet. Viewers watched from around the country, e-mailing questions that Holt and a panel of electrical engineering experts answered on camera.

The project, coordinated with the City of Leesburg and Video Craft Productions Inc. in Eustis, introduced Holt to the high-tech world of live Internet-based training. But he easily sees how the technology, which utilized Lakefront TV’s studio and cameras with the city’s high-speed, fiber-optic data network, could be used for everything from business meetings to special events.

“This allows us to produce a better product,” Holt explained. “I think it really connected with people who were watching – they could ask questions and make suggestions. We then changed the program based on their comments.”

Bruce Marcho, who started Video Craft 15 years ago, said the access to a production studio and support from the city’s fiber-optic data network is an ideal combination: “It is really convenient for my clients to have a local facility like this.”

Leesburg provided Mike Holt with Internet access through its high-speed, fiber-optic data communications system. The city currently operates more than 300 linear miles of fiber-optic cable throughout most of Lake County.

“Mike Holt’s video production is a good example of how the communications network supports local businesses every day,” said Leesburg communications manager Jim Lemberg. “We also provide reliable service to governments, schools and hospitals.”

Leesburg is a progressive city of more than 20,000 residents in northwest Lake County. The city government serves twice as many people with its electric, gas, water, wastewater and fiber-optic public utilities. Leesburg also is a central hub for commerce, attracting 50,000 people to work each weekday.
