Leesburg to hold GIS Day events for students

Leesburg, FL - The city of Leesburg GIS Department and Leesburg Public Library will celebrate GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.GIS Department and Library staff members

Events are planned for students from middle school age through college level. The educational sessions are 10:00am to 12:00pm for middle school age and 1:00pm to 3:00pm for high school and college age. An additional session on GIS careers is scheduled from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. The Leesburg Public Library is located at 100 E. Main Street.

“We are happy to be hosting the annual GIS Day together with Lake County GIS, Sumter County GIS and the Lake County School Board. The event is a great way to increase awareness and expose students to possible career paths in Geographic Information Systems,” said Leesburg Network and GIS Manager Mike Andrews.

The Library and GIS staff will join hundreds of organizations across six continents in presenting events to ignite the imagination of future geospatial innovators. Students will work with an augmented reality sandbox that combined with 3D visualization applications, makes landscape come to life. The sand is augmented in real-time with an elevation color map, topographic contour lines and simulated water and can be used to teach basic geographic, geologic and hydrologic concepts.  This hands-on activity is for all age levels. There will be other age specific activities that stretch imagination and help students discover the world of GIS.

“Our demonstrations will include real-time field data collection applications, drone videos and the augmented reality sandbox,” said Andrews. “The AR sandbox is of particular interest.  It’s a really fun, interactive tool and new to the event this year.”

Registration is required for all GIS Day sessions. For more information or to sign up a student up for the educational sessions, please email librarian@leesburgflorida.gov.
