Leesburg receives budget award for twenty-second consecutiveyear

LEESBURG, FL – The Government Finance Officer Association’s (GFOA) has presented its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the City of Leesburg for the 2019-20 Annual Budget. This marks the twenty-second consecutive year the City has received the award, a remarkable accomplishment that reflects the dedication of the commission and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

To receive the budget award, an agency must satisfy nationally recognized standards for effective budget presentation. Leesburg was evaluated on how well its budget serves as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide and communications device. To qualify, the budget document must to be rated “proficient” in all four categories, while also meeting 14 mandatory criteria within these categories.

A Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is accompanied by a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation that is presented to the those primarily responsible for having achieved the award.

“The foundation of our City’s continued success is built on our commitment to planning and managing our budget,” said City Manager, Al Minner. “We are honored to receive this award and very proud of the team that develops and prepares the budget each year.”

The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality.  There are over 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website.  Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
